VARESE 2008-UCI ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS

I’m Emanuela IZ2ELV and I’m going to introduce you a project, which is very important and little by little is concretising. It came out on January 2006 from an idea of mine and I proposed it to our friend Mario IZ2GAO and to my husband Fulvio IZ2EXA: “Why don’t we announce an Award for the UCI Road World Championships Varese 2008?”. They appreciated a lot my proposal, so we decided to draft this project and immediately agreed to devolve the whole proceed of this Award to the Catholic Mission of Ingorč in Guinea Bissau.

We began immediately to work; Mario IZ2GAO contacted the event’s organization, Mr. Amedeo Colombo, chiefs of the Society VARESE 2008 S.p.A. and Mr. Gabriele Sola, the General Manager. He explained them our Ham Radio’s project and they accepted with pleasure to give  us the permission to publish the logo “UCI Road World Championships Varese 2008”on our Awards, QSL cards and in our website.

In the meantime Fulvio and I drafted the first steps of Award rule; analysing the winners list of the previous competitions we realized that Alfredo Binda, the champion from Varese area, won in 1933 the first Road World Championship, so in 2008 we could celebrate also the 75th anniversary, moreover he won again twice in the further competitions. In consideration of these facts, we thought also to celebrate the first victory of his.

As mentioned before, it’s our great desire to help the Catholic Mission of Ingorč in Guinea Bissau, devolving the whole proceed of the Award’s contributors, where an Italian nun, Sister Romana Sacchetti, has been managed since 1981. After contacted her on air several times, when she makes her weekly QSO as J5UAQ with OM volunteers, who often help her, arranging containers with humanitarian aids, Mario, Fulvio and I had the great pleasure to meet her on May 2006 during her stay in Italy.

In the Catholic Mission “Maria de Mattias” Sister Romana takes care of about 800 children, who came from nearby villages and go to nursery school, primary and secondary school.  They have lunch there and moreover she assure health service to the children and their families. She has a great experience also as special nurse, but sometimes Sister Romana have to take the place of the doctor in emergency. Her great desire is to finish the little hospital which at the moment lays in foundations and to provide it of about 40 beds and a little operating room, in order to permit to the parturients and their babies to have a respectable assistance. Thanks to the kind contributors, who will apply for our Award, we hope to give to Sister Romana, on behalf of them a substantial help to finish and equip her hospital.
